Another user reported on IRC it is related to the kernel bump to 4.14.
He is aware of the issue since a few weeks (at the time k4.14 was
optional), but didn't created a bugreport since he had to create an
account for the bugtracker...
On a first glance it kind of looks like a regression in the linux kernel.

Most likely not, as it requires a line with PPPoA which isn't that
common. PPPoE works still fine. Your best bet is to bisect kernel 4.9
to 4.14 to find the commit which breaks PPPoA.
