Yeah, replace it with:
gzip -9n -c $(BIN_DIR)/$(IMG_PREFIX)-sdcard-vfat-$(1).img > $(BIN_DIR)/$(IMG_PREFIX)-sdcard-vfat-$(1).img.gz
